Counting words and characters, instantly
Whether you are writing an essay with a strict word limit, composing a tweet, drafting a meta description under 160 characters, or just curious how long an article is, the Word & Character Counter gives you a live count as you type — no button press, no reload, no account.
What the counter measures
- Words. Contiguous runs of non-whitespace characters. “state-of-the-art” counts as one word; “state of the art” counts as four.
- Characters (with spaces). Every code point you typed or pasted, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks.
- No-space characters. Useful for platforms (like legacy SMS gateways) that only count printable non-whitespace.
- Sentences. Runs of text separated by
.,!or?. Abbreviations like “Dr.” can over-count in rare cases — this is a known limitation of simple sentence detection. - Paragraphs. Blocks separated by one or more blank lines.
- Reading time. Based on an average adult reading speed of 225 WPM.
When a word counter helps
- Academic essays and assignments that specify a minimum or maximum word count.
- SEO meta descriptions (target ~150–160 characters).
- Social posts where platforms impose a character ceiling.
- Resumes and cover letters where tight, purposeful writing matters.
- Newsletter copy when you need a realistic reading-time estimate for subscribers.
